Professional School Toilet Refurbishments UK
Look, we've all been in those grim school loos. You know the ones - the smell hits you before you even push the door open. Kids avoiding them all day, parents complaining, teachers dreading break duty.
Here's the thing though - it doesn't have to be like that.

“The kids noticed straight away, no rattles, no leaks, and the colours look brilliant. Macawʼs advice turned a quick fix into a long-term solution.ˮ
Craig Palmer. Site Manager, Rothley Primary School
Why School Toilet Refurbishments Matters
We've worked with enough schools to know that school toilet refurbishments aren't just about pretty tiles and shiny taps. When Year 7s are holding it in all day because they're too embarrassed to use the facilities, that's a problem that affects everything - concentration, confidence, even attendance.
The stats back this up too. More than half of secondary school toilets show signs of vandalism. But here's what the surveys don't tell you - most of that damage happens because the facilities were already pretty grim to start with.
School Toilet Refurbishment Case Study
Blakesley CofE Primary School
Timeline: In term time (3 weeks)
Scope: Refurbishment of classroom washrooms and reception
The Key Stage 1 washrooms in this 19th-century village school were charmingly old-fashioned —right down to “Jurassicˮ cast-iron pipework, rattling sash vents and cracked quarry tiles. Charm, however, doesn't mop up condensation or meet modern safeguarding standards. Macaw delivered a full turnkey refurbishment that solved todays problems while respecting the buildings character
Healthy air, happy kids: we re-engineered ventilation with low-noise extract fans and ducting discreetly threaded through attic voids, ending decades of damp. Future-proof services: obsolete pipework was replaced with insulated copper feeds, point-of-use water heaters and non-concussive, water-saving taps.
Robust, bright interiors: slip-resistant safety flooring, wipe-clean uPVC cladding and colour accent feature walls stand up to daily hard knocks. Splash-shaped mirrors add fun; energy efficient hand-dryers speed the turnaround between lessons. Child-centred layout: we removed a little-used urinal run to create an extra cubicle, fitted low-height doors with friendly thumb turn locks and used soft-close hardware throughout.

Our school Hall Park Academy are pleased to share our thoughts on the newly refurbished school toilets, which have made a noticeable difference to the overall environment and student experience. The refurbishment has brought a fresh, modern look to the facilities. The new layout is more spacious and better ventilated, which has significantly improved hygiene and comfort. The addition of hand dryers, and improved lighting has made the space more user-friendly and energy-efficient. Students have commented positively on the brighter colours, cleaner appearance, and increased privacy. The new cubicles and doors offer better security and comfort, and the anti-vandal fittings are a smart addition for long-term durability. From a site management perspective, the materials used are clearly chosen for ease of maintenance and cleaning, which helps us keep the facilities in top condition with less effort. Overall, the refurbishment has been a great success and has had a positive impact on both staff and students. It reflects a strong commitment to providing a safe, clean, and respectful environment for everyone in the school community. We would strongly recommend Macaw washrooms to help design your project and deliver the project within a desired time to a high quality . Macaws have been brilliant from start to finish. We contacted them after suffering from a leak to one of the toilet blocks and the resulting concealed damage to the boys toilets at the Oaks Scout campsite. They worked with us and our insurers to give us the best outcome with available budget, whilst working around our need to still be operational. The finished works look great and we are very pleased with the outcome. We are now looking to engage with them on further projects.Posted on Guilsborough CalendarTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Lovely new toilet and washrooms fitted in our reception area. Craig and the team went through everything with me before, during and after the job. The area was finished to a great standard and looks amazing. Very friendly service. Thank you.Posted on Adam SmithTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We engaged with Macaw Washrooms to refurb our 2 changing rooms, showers and referee’s room at our football club. They were nothing but fantastic from the start. We were visited straight away after making contact, and we explained what we were looking for and within days we had designs to peruse over, and after choosing the fixtures and fittings, we immediately confirmed the order. The project manager explained every step leading up to the start date as no question was too small and Mark and his team of fitters were excellent once they arrived and so professional. We also had problems with the drainage in one of the rooms, something that we have had to live with as a club for years, but Macaw have even sorted that out for us. We cannot praise Macaw Washrooms enough for the service they have provided from start to finish, and we have had amazing feedback from everyone. I’d just like to say on behalf of the club, Macaw Washrooms are simply the best and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them. Adam Smith — Chairman, Ingles F.C.Posted on Google rating score: 5.0 of 5,

How We Refurbish School Toilets
First Things First - We Listen
Every school toilet refurbishment starts with a chat. Not just measurements and quotes, but understanding what's actually going wrong. Is it Year 9s ripping soap dispensers off walls? Reception kids unable to reach the taps?
Our project manager (and you get the same person throughout - none of this passing you around different departments) will spend time with your premise manager, your head, even some of the kids if that's appropriate. Because they're the ones who'll tell you what really needs fixing.
Design That Makes Sense
We've learned a few things over the years about school toilet refurbishments:
- Open sight lines work. Not because we don't trust kids, but because trouble happens in hidden corners
- Height matters. Primary school children can't reach adult-height everything
- Robust doesn't have to mean ugly. We can make it look good AND survive daily use
The Boring But Important Stuff
All our school toilet refurbishments meet the Department of Education guidelines, obviously. But more importantly, they meet the "will this actually work for the next ten years" test.
Our technicians are all DBS checked - not just because we have to be, but because we know how important safeguarding is. We've got kids ourselves. We get it.
What You Actually Get for Your Money
Most school toilet refurbishments cost between £15,000 and £25,000 per room. Sounds like a lot? Here's what that actually includes:
- Ripping out everything that's not working (which is usually most of it)
- Waterproofing so you're not dealing with leaks in six months
- Vandal-resistant fixtures that still look decent
- Non-slip flooring because wet floors and running children don't mix
- Lighting that actually works and doesn't flicker ominously
But honestly? The real value is in not having to think about your toilets for the next decade. No emergency call-outs, no constant repairs, no complaints from parents.
Sustainability
We're not going to bore you with endless green credentials, but our school toilet refurbishments do include water-saving taps and efficient lighting. Not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it'll save you money. Proper savings too - some schools cut their water bills by half.
School Toilet Refurbishments Frequently Asked Questions
The cost depends on the size of the washroom block and what needs replacing. A typical 4-cubicle refurb with new partitions, sanitaryware, and flooring usually ranges from £15,000-£25,000. We provide detailed quotes after a site visit so there are no surprises. Costs can be spread across budget years if needed, and we work with schools to maximise value from available funding.
Yes - most of our school toilet refurbishments are completed during summer holidays to avoid disrupting lessons. We schedule the work around your term dates and aim to finish with time to spare before pupils return. For urgent repairs, we can also work during half-term breaks or even term time if a phased approach works better for your school.
It depends on the layout. If your school has multiple toilet blocks, we can refurb one at a time so pupils always have facilities available. For single-block schools, we can phase the work (boys/girls separately) or provide temporary facilities if needed. We'll work out the least disruptive approach during our site survey.
Absolutely. All our installation team members are DBS checked as standard. We understand schools need to maintain safeguarding standards, so clearance certificates are provided before work starts. We also carry full public liability insurance and follow strict site safety protocols.
We handle all removal and disposal responsibly. Usable fixtures in good condition are donated to community projects or recycling centres where possible. Everything else is disposed of through licensed waste carriers following environmental regulations. Your site is left clean and clear - no skip hire needed.
A standard 4-6 cubicle toilet block usually takes 2-3 weeks from strip-out to completion. Larger blocks or complex layouts (like adding disabled facilities or reconfiguring plumbing) might take 3-4 weeks. We provide a detailed schedule before starting so you know exactly when pupils can use the facilities again.
